BATAVIA — The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce did not have a chance to offer Business After Hours Schmoozer last month, but things got back to normal Thursday night when more than 30 people gathered at Empire Hemp Co., LLC.

“We were in a retail area in downtown Batavia and that’s something, as a chamber, we’re really trying to focus on promoting,” said Chamber of Commerce President Erik Fix. ”We’re here for every business.”

On Thursday, the chamber was highlighting the that CEO Chris VanDusen and Vice President Shelly Wolanske were able to open a business and succeed downtown, at 204 E. Main St.

“It didn’t exist a few years ago and it is growing rapidly and it was a perfect opportunity for us to showcase and highlight that,” Fix said.

The chamber president said the event also gave VanDusen and Wolanske a chance to talk about what they do and for attendees to see their products. The turnout was above-average for Business After Hours, Fix said.

According to its website, Empire Hemp Co. produces a wide range of hemp-derived CBD products for the purpose of providing happiness, health, healing and wellness.

Thursday’s event was the chamber’s first in 2022, Fix said.

“We’ve got one scheduled for every month from now to June. Last night (Thursday), it just happened to be Empire Hemp. It was an opportunity for folks to come in and, with Valentines Day coming, come in and get some unique gifts. It was just a good opportunity to highlight a business downtown. A lot of it was businesses coming out to support their neighbor, which is nice to see.”

Business After Hours events been growing every month.

In January, the county Chamber of Commerce was planning its own 50th anniversary ribbon-cutting event, Fix noted. That was part of the reason for not having a Business After Hours that month.

“It was just a matter of timing and January is a hard month to plan an event like that,” he said.

Fix said the next Business After Hours Schmoozer will be March 24 at Terry Hills Golf Course, Restaurant & Banquet Facility.

It will also feature the Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation and a chance for people to learn more about what the foundation does.

The foundation’s mission includes assisting families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment, and providing those children with support during treatment and the means to remain connected with school, family and friends.
